Step 1: Decide Your Layout First

The layout determines everything else. Get this wrong and no amount of expensive hardware fixes it.

  • L-Shaped — most popular in Indian homes. Works for 80–150 sq ft kitchens. Good work triangle.
  • U-Shaped — maximum storage. Needs 150+ sq ft and careful corner design to avoid 'dead zones'.
  • Parallel / Galley — efficient for narrow kitchens. Two walls, clear workflow.
  • Straight / One-Wall — compact apartments. Storage limited; use tall units to compensate.
  • Island — open-plan homes only. Requires minimum 180 sq ft of kitchen+dining space.

Step 2: The Work Triangle

The kitchen work triangle connects your refrigerator, hob, and sink. Each side should be 1.2–2.7m. Combined perimeter should not exceed 8m. This determines whether cooking feels effortless or exhausting.

Step 3: Storage Planning (Most People Skip This)

Before choosing finishes, list everything you need to store — pots, pans, plates, spices, appliances, groceries. Then design storage zones:

  • Cooking zone (near hob): oil, spices, utensils, pans
  • Preparation zone (near sink): cutting boards, bowls, knives
  • Storage zone (away from heat): dry groceries, appliances not used daily
  • Cleaning zone (near sink): detergents, cleaning supplies

Step 4: Choose Materials in This Order

  • Carcass plywood first (structure — BWP IS 710 mandatory for kitchens)
  • Hardware brand second (HETTICH minimum — this determines your daily experience)
  • Shutter finish third (laminate, acrylic, or lacquer — aesthetics)
  • Countertop last (granite, quartz, or stainless — functional surface)

Step 5: Questions to Ask Your Kitchen Manufacturer

  • What plywood grade and brand do you use? (Insist on IS 710 BWP in writing)
  • What is the hardware brand and model? (Get specific — 'HETTICH Series 3' not just 'HETTICH')
  • What is the edge banding thickness? (1mm minimum)
  • Do you manufacture in-house or outsource to carpenters?
  • What warranty do you provide? In writing?
  • Can I visit your factory or see installed projects?
