The Bias Problem

Every article comparing modular vs carpenter furniture is written by someone selling one of them. We make modular wardrobes — so read this with that in mind. But we'll give you the real data and let you decide.

Where Carpenter Work Genuinely Wins

  • Unusual room shapes (sloped ceilings, unusual alcoves) — a carpenter can adapt on-site in ways factory production cannot
  • Very small budgets — a basic carpenter wardrobe can cost 30–40% less upfront
  • When you need it in 3 days — carpenter can start immediately; factory lead time is 3–4 weeks

Where Modular Consistently Wins

Plywood Quality Control

A factory buys and stores BWP plywood in bulk, tests moisture content, and rejects non-conforming boards. A carpenter buys from the local timber yard, often doesn't test, and may substitute grades when his usual supplier is out of stock.

Hardware

A factory builds relationships with HETTICH and HAFELE and buys genuine product. A carpenter often buys hardware from local hardware shops — which may sell counterfeit European hardware. The HETTICH logo on a ₹15 hinge from a local shop is not the same product as the ₹120 hinge from an authorised distributor.

CNC Precision vs Hand Cutting

A CNC machine cuts to 0.1mm tolerance. A carpenter's circular saw cuts to ±2–3mm tolerance. That difference shows up in how doors hang, whether drawers run parallel, and whether the assembled unit is square. It becomes visible after a year of use when doors start misaligning.

Warranty

Greelak's modular wardrobes carry a 10-year warranty. Ask your carpenter for a warranty in writing. Most will laugh.

The 5-Year Cost Reality

  • Carpenter wardrobe — Year 1: looks good. Year 2: hinges start squeaking. Year 3: drawer misaligns. Year 5: one door doesn't close, shelf sags.
  • Modular wardrobe — Year 1–5: zero issues with quality hardware. German hinges rated for 75,000+ cycles.
  • Repair cost on carpenter wardrobe at Year 3–5: ₹4,000–₹15,000 depending on damage.
  • Initial price difference: typically ₹15,000–₹40,000 for a 6-door wardrobe. Often recovered in repairs avoided.
